What is a Dean’s Absence Verification?

A dean’s absence verification is a letter from the Office of Advising & Co-Curricular Programs that notifies faculty when a student has a legitimate reason for missing class. If granted and accepted, students should work with their faculty member(s) to determine a plan to complete missed work. Please note absence verifications cannot override the allowed amount of absences designated by the respective faculty member. If absences exceed faculty attendance policies, faculty may request a formal Dean’s Review to assess the student’s performance.

Dean’s Absence Verifications for religious observances can be granted in cases when a religious holiday or observance conflicts with one’s ability to participate in class. Students should first use the Qualtrics form to determine if their absence falls under pre-approved observances. This form will automatically notify faculty via email once submitted. If your observance does not occur on the pre-approved dates, students will be directed to complete the dean’s absence verification through Maxient.

Please note, verifications for religious observances will not include travel time nor can they be granted retrospectively.
